Maria João Cardoso, MD, PhD is a renowned breast surgeon, working at the Champalimaud Foundation since 2011. Since 2024, she has been the Director of the Champalimaud Breast Cancer Research Program. Her PhD thesis and subsequent research primarily focuses on the objective evaluation of aesthetic results in breast cancer surgery to improve patient quality of life. She is Associate Professor of Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine in Lisbon. Prof Cardoso is the medical coordinator of the Breast Research Group at INESC TEC and principal investigator of the EU Horizon 2022–funded CINDERELLA Project. She has published over 100 papers and co-authored over 200 communications for major conferences. Prof Cardoso is actively involved in breast cancer advocacy, serving as President of Mama Help, a support center for patients with breast cancer. She serves as a member of the faculty for ESMO and ESO.
